The unemployment rate for Black Americans fell to an all-time low of 5.4% in January, according to data released Friday by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That was down from 5.7% in December.

The nation’s overall unemployment rate was little changed 3.4%.

Employers added 517,000 jobs last month, a total far higher than economists had predicted, a signal that the U.S. economy may be resilient.
