MONROE, N.C. — A Monroe police officer shot and killed a dog after reports that the dog was allegedly attacking a mother and child Monday afternoon.
The Monroe Police Department responded to Old Charlotte Highway, nearby North Rocky River Road, around 3 p.m. after multiple reports about multiple people at the location being attacked by a dog and that there was a school bus involved. Upon arrival, police heard the bus driver yelling that the dogs were attacking a woman and child, according to officials.
The officer located a German Shepherd mix and Rottweiler. The Shepherd mix came toward the officer aggressively, he attempted to create distance, but the dog continued to behave aggressively resulting in the unidentified officer being forced to shoot the German Shepherd mix, Monroe police said. The Rottweiler ran away and was secured in a gate.
Through an investigation, officers determined that a parent was waiting on her 5-year-old daughter to get off of a bus when the dogs ran up to her and her child as she got off the bus. The German Shepherd began attacking them resulting in the parent and her daughter being bitten and scratched.
The victims were treated by Union EMS at the scene and did not require additional medical attention.
According to a news release, animal control officers arrived on the scene and collected the injured dog then spoke to the owner about the Rottweiler. Officers confirmed the dog was dead and that it would be sent off for testing.
The dogs’ owner was identified, and at this time, no charges have been filed.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
