Man Sentenced In Drunk Driving Crash, Killing Uber Driver

CHARLOTTE — A man who crashed his car into an Uber driver, killing him, will spend up to 13 years in prison.

Jimmy Gallarday expressed his sorrow in court Thursday during his sentencing for killing Juan Octavio Reyes, an Uber driver, back in 2018.  Police say Gallarday was driving drunk and speeding along Runnymede Lane around 11:30 p.m.  He crossed the center line, and crashed head on into an SUV driven by 31-year-old Juan Octavio Reyes, an Uber driver.  Reyes, a husband and father of two, died on the scene.  His widow, through an interpreter, spoke to Gallarday in court.

“Ever since I saw your picture that day, your image has stayed in my mind and has caused pain and grief to my heart,” Mrs. Reyes said.

“I’m so sorry.  This is so hard for me, and I can’t imagine how much harder it is for you guys.  I’m so sorry,” says Gallarday.

The victim’s family told Gallarday they forgave him.  A judge sentenced him to between seven and 13 years in prison in a plea deal.
