Lenoir-Rhyne University Football Player Found Shot To Death Inside Car

UPDATE: Lenoir-Rhyne University confirms Alexander was a member of the football team. He also played football at Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte.

HICKORY, N.C. — Police have opened an investigation after finding a 19-year-old man shot to death inside a car in a parking lot in Hickory early Saturday morning.

Officers say they responded to shots fired at Civitan Court Apartments on 17th Avenue NE around 1 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers say the found a black 2015 Chevrolet Camaro with the engine running in the parking lot of the apartment complex.

When officers approached the car, they say they found an unresponsive 19-year-old Black man, Omari Alexander, sitting in the driver’s sear with multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers attempted to provide medical aid to Alexander until medic arrived at the scene, but Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say there is no suspect information to release at this time.
