CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Kyle Rittenhouse is acquitted on all charges. The 12 person juror made up of five men and seven women, deliberated for four days this week and came to not guilty verdict on Friday. 18-year-old Rittenhouse faced five felony charges for killing two people and injuring one other during unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin last year. The defense argued he shot the three in self defense. Prior to the not guilty verdict, the defense filed a motion for mistrial with prejudice, meaning the state would not be able to retry Rittenhouse. They blamed intentional “prosecutorial overreach” related to the prosecution’s line of questioning during Rittenhouse’s testimony last week.
Defense attorney Mark Richards says, “It’s been a long three weeks. We’re very happy with the verdict. We’re happy that the jury took the time, put in an incredible amount of effort. There were times when we doubted the case. There were times we were confident. And to say that we are relieved would be a gross understatement.”
Senator Ron Johnson from Wisconsin tweeted his reaction to the verdict saying, “I believe justice has been served in the Kyle Rittenhouse trial. I hope everyone can accept the verdict, remain peaceful, and let the community of Kenosha heal and rebuild.”
The youngest child of the late Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., Bernice King, shared her response on Twitter as well, saying, “This is not surprising, family. We know where we are. Let’s walk and work together to shift to this nation and world.” She added, “I know many are weary and tired but justice is not a verdict, it’s a continuum.”
