Detectives Investigate A Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision In West Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg detectives are investigating a fatal collision in west Charlotte after the driver of an Audi hit a Honda Civic killing both the driver and passenger inside on Friday.

Officers responded to the collision on Wilkinson Boulevard around 9 p.m. to find a gray 2020 Audi Q3 SUV and a white 2006 Honda Civic with severe damage in the roadway.

The driver of the Honda, 32-year-old Rodney Grier, and his passenger, 37-year-old Emanuel Jackson, were found dead at the scene, according to a news release.

Detectives say the driver of the Audi, 26-year-old Leroy Hopkins, was taken to a local hospital following the crash with minor injuries.

Initial investigation reveals that Hopkins was heading east on Wilkinson Boulevard and traveled through the intersection of Old Steel Creek Road at a very high rate of speed before striking the Honda that was turning left onto Donald Ross Road from westbound Wilkinson Boulevard.

Detectives say after being hit by the Audi, the Honda traveled off the roadway and struck a utility pole.

The Audi came to a rest on it left in the roadway, according to a news release.

Detectives say all occupants involved in the two-vehicle collision were wearing their seatbelts.

Detectives continue to investigate the circumstance involving the collision.
