CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Detectives are investigating a fatal collision in north Charlotte after a man was crushed by an 18-wheeler in the parking lot of a local business Friday morning.
Detectives say around 8:40 a.m. officers responded to the single-motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in a parking lot on Atando Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers located an 18-wheel truck and trailer with its operator, Silvio Ocampo, and the victim, identified as 45-year-old Jose Guerra-Mejia.
Medic then took Guerra-Mejia to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries where he later died.
Investigators have determined that Ocampo arrived at the business to deliver a trailer, and after detaching the trailer, he moved the tractor to the opposite side of the business in order to attach another trailer for delivery.
Detectives say once Ocampo arrived at the second trailer, he began to back the tractor up to the trailer and struck Guerra-Mejia, who was removing a security device underneath the trailer.
Police say it is believed that Ocampo did not know Guerra-Mejia was in the area or underneath the trailer, and currently there are no pending charges.
The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing.
Police ask anyone who witnessed the crash to call Detective Crum at 704-432-2169, extension 4, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/.
