CMPD, Community Members Mourn Loss Of 28-Year Veteran Police Officer

WCCB sources have confirmed that Officer Herrera died due to COVID-19 complications.

The funeral service for CMPD Officer Herrera will be held on Monday, October 11th at First Baptist Church on South Davidson Street starting at 10 a.m.

The Herrera family is asking the media to refrain from bringing in recording equipment into the church during the service.

Those attending the funeral must wear face coverings.

Prior to the funeral service at around 8:30 a.m., a processional will pass by Ardrey Kell High School where students and staff wish to honor Officer Officer Herrera’s 15 years of service to the school as a School Resource Officer.

School officials say the Ardrey Kell parking lot will close at 7:45 a.m. to prepare for officers to arrive on campus and line up.

Students and teachers who arrive at school after this time will be asked to enter campus through the Society Street entrance and park in the bus lot.

Ardrey Kell will also operate on an early release schedule.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department along with the community are mourning the death of one of its veteran officers.

“Rest easy, brother,” CMPD tweeted. “Your CMPD family misses you greatly.”

CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings tweeted Tuesday morning that 28-year Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Officer Julio Herrera died.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I share with our CLT family of Ofc. Julio Herrera’s passing,” the Chief Jennings tweeted. “He has spent the last 28 years serving the CLT community.”

Herrera leaves behind his wife and two children, according to Jennings as he requests prayers for the family.

The veteran officer also mentored students.

“He’ll also be missed by the many students he mentored at Ardrey Kell High School,” Jennings wrote.
