CMPD: 1 Dead, Others Injured After Suspected Impaired Man Crashes Into CATS Bus In Northwest Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have arrested the driver of an SUV following a deadly car crash involving a CATS bus in northwest Charlotte on Thursday.

Officers responded to the wreck on Mount Holly Road near I-485 around 12 p.m.

At the scene, officers located a CATS bus with heavy front-end damage and a Mazda CX-5 SUV with severe front-end damage.

The driver of the SUV, 22-year-old Derwin Lewis, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries following the crash.

His passenger, yet to be identified, sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release.

Officers say some passengers from the CATS bus also sustained minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Detectives say initial investigation reveals that Lewis was heading east on Mount Holly Road and was attempting to turn left to enter the on-ramp for I-485.

A CATS bus was traveling west on Mount Holly Road when Lewis turned left in front of the bus, failing to yield to the right of way, forcing the bus to collide with the SUV.

Police say Lewis was found to be impaired and was arrested.

Following an interview with detectives, Lewis was charged with a DWI, Felony Death by Motor Vehicle, and Failure to Yield the Right of Way for his involvement in the crash.

The investigation into the collision is active and ongoing.
