KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – An African-American woman’s campaign for city council is setting the stage for an historic election in Kannapolis.
Jeanne Dixon is trying to win one of three seats up for grabs in Tuesday’s election.
A victory means she could be the first African-American female to serve on Kannapolis City Council.
The focus of Dixon’s campaign is revitalization of areas outside downtown and affordable hosusing.
Dixon hopes to inspire others.
“I think that it is important for little girls, the little black and brown girls in our community, to see someone who looks more like them and say, ‘you know if she can do it, I can do this,’” she says.
The top three vote-getters out of 11 running will get seats on council.
