CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A fourth student has died from injuries sustained during Tuesday’s school shooting in Oxford, Michigan. According to Oakland County officials, 17-year-old Justin Shilling died in an area hospital Wednesday. Authorities say Shilling was one of eight people injured after a 15-year-old student opened fire at Oxford High School Tuesday afternoon.
The school district has closed all of its schools for the rest of the week as the community tries to deal with the tragedy. Authorities have also identified the suspected shooter, 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley. He’s charged, as an adult, with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of terrorism causing death. He also faces seven counts of assault with intent to murder and 12 counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald says, “When we sat down and talked about the charges that were applicable in this case, the children that I have just listed and those that were injured, they are the victims in the first degree murder charges and the assault with intent to murder. But what about all these other children? What about all the children who ran, screaming, hiding under desks? What about all the children at home right now who can’t eat and can’t sleep and can’t imagine a world where they could ever set foot back in that school? Those are victims, too. And so are their families. And so is the community. And the charge of terrorism reflects that.”
Authorities say the crime was premeditated and that these are just initial charges. They say additional charges could be issued as the investigation continues to unfold.
Tuesday’s shooting in Oxford is the U.S.’s deadliest school shooting since May 2018. That’s when eight students and two teachers were killed at Santa Fe High School in Texas.
Our question of the night: When will schools step up and add more security for students? But really, the better question: when will people who don’t properly secure their fire arms be held accountable?
